THE KEITH BROMLEY AWARDS

In 2004 the Bromley Trust set up three awards in memory of our settlor, Keith (Toby) Bromley. The trust chose three charities involved with prison reform. In the last decade Keith Bromley had been particularly concerned with the plight of prisoners in overcrowded prisons and the endless waste of public resources spent building more and more prisons. He understood the cycle of re-offending and saw the value of supporting offenders to learn a trade that would enable them to gain employment after release.

THE HARDMAN TRUST
The Hardman Trust was founded in 1994 for the purpose of assisting prisoners to equip themselves to lead law-abiding lives by extending training and educational opportunities before release. Awards are given to a number of prisoners twice a year to help purchase training courses or tools. The Awards are presented during a ceremony to which the award winners and their guests are invited. During the ceremony a citation is read out in testament to the prisoner's conduct and achievements and a commendatory certificate signed by the Lord Chief Justice is presented. A Keith Bromley Award is dedicated to the provision of trade tools and equipment or assistance in starting up a small business.

The Bromley Trust has been supporting the Hardman Trust from an early period of its development. When approached the chair of the Hardman Trust, Jim McKinnon stated:

"The Hardman Trust would be honoured to name an award after a man who showed so much concern and compassion for prisoners and who was a great support to the Hardman Trust over the years."

The Hardman Trust will present Keith Bromley Awards up to a total value of £5000 pa for a period of 5 years.

THE BUTLER TRUST
The Butler trust was set up in 1985 to promote excellence and innovation in UK prisons. Each year 300 nominations are made for innovative, creative and effective work initiated by individuals or teams of prison officers, teachers, probation officers and other staff and volunteers working in prison. There are 15 major award winners each year, 11of these are awards in specific areas of prison work. In 2003 this was yet to include the field of Education and Skill training. The inaugural Keith Bromley Award for Education and Skill training will be presented at St James's Palace in 2005.

The Award is for £12,000 pa for a period of 5 years.

PRISON REFORM TRUST
In 2000 Keith Bromley began circulating what he called his 'naïve notes' on prison reform. The Bromley Trust is very excited that the Prison Reform Trust has decided to rename their regular and widely disseminated briefings, the 'Bromley Briefings' in memory of Keith Bromley and the work he started.

Juliet Lyon, Director of the Prison Reform Trust writes:

"His naïve notes were of course far from naïve, and contained a potent mix of facts and figures provided by PRT together with Toby's (Keith Bromley) incisive economic and social analysis of the state of our prisons. His concern was to make sure that people in general know what was going on in the prison system and that key decision makers used the information to effect much needed change."

This Award is in the sum of £15,000 pa.

THE KOESTLER AWARD TRUST
The Koestler Award Trust encourages and rewards a variety of creative endeavours culminating in an annual exhibition of work from prison, probation and secure psychiatric hospitals.

The Koestler Award Trust asked the Bromley Trust whether they could name a prize after Keith Bromley as he had been such a support to their work over the years. The Bromley Trust chose nature photography as this had been a great interest of Keith Bromley throughout his life. The Keith Bromley Award for Outstanding Nature Photography was presented for the first time at the Koestler exhibition in 2004.
